A major concern is the sycophantic nature of AI chatbots—they consistently agree with and support users, which deprives children of important social learning experiences such as disagreement, conflict resolution, and critical thinking. These interactions are crucial for healthy social development, helping young people learn how to navigate challenges and think differently. The lack of friction or challenge in conversations with AI may stunt this growth, creating an unhealthy dynamic where children receive uncritical validation rather than constructive feedback.
Another significant risk is that some chatbots pose as therapists or provide mental health advice without any medical validation. Children may be misled into believing these chatbots are trustworthy sources of support, sometimes being told harmful things like “Your parents don’t love you” or that the chatbot is the only one they can trust.
